Description
It’s 1970, Rob and Jake luck out with high draft numbers in the first draft lottery to draft young men to fight in the Vietnam War. They are free to travel and Rob has a new Datsun hatchback, perfect for a coast-to-coast trip with no particular destination except to see the country before heading to -Alaska to find work on the new pipeline. Rob narrates their journey that begins at Duke University where friends Horney Ray, Doctor Boo, Trimly Jimly and others experience the culture of the sixties including anti-war demonstrations, a Ku Klux Klan initiation, protest trips to Washington, an after-concert off-campus, party where Janis Joplin suddenly appears, the Duke Silent Vigil after Dr. Martin Luther King is assassinated and the Allen Building take-over. While their roommates and friends join the military or do alternate service, Rob and Jake meet up on Cape Cod where they decide to spend the summer traveling, the Datsun becoming their tent during stormy weather.
First heading to the Newport Jazz Festival where a stoned-out group causes a riot, Rob and Jake travel to Acadia National Park, cross the Gaspe Peninsula, visit Prince Edward Island, then return to the US. In New Orleans they sell Lucky Dogs in the French Quarter, hang out Images
